Last month we had a surprise guest that was found in the middle of the road. Luckily he wasn't smashed by a car. He is a Desert Tortoise. We have no idea how he got to the mountains of Mendocino County. He was very dehydrated and thin. We researched how to care for him. He was given leaf lettuce and watermelon to rehydrate him and give him energy. He perked up and seemed to be happy with the diet we found he needed. But, we weren't prepared for his long term care and besides this species requires a special permit to have. We found a wonderful rescue/sanctuary that agreed to accept him into their program. We got a super update stating he is doing great and loves him new life. They named him Cowboy and a video showed he came up the ramp into the house and was cruising around the living room. He has quite a life now. He will be prepared for winter hibernation soon. You can check out Tortoise Acres in Anderson, California for more info.
