Last week we received a call about a kitten that was left at a business in a box on a pile of other boxes going to the dump. Gosh, when I got there I thought he was dead. On closer look I could see he was barely breathing. All the way home I watched to see if I could see him breath. Every once in a while his foot would twitch but couldn't really see him take a breath.
His temperature wouldn't even register on the thermometer. I put him in a warm bath to try to bring his temp up as well as get the hundreds of fleas off of him. He wasn't responsive at all. After drying him with the hair dryer, putting him on a heating pad with a bag of warm fluids against him his temp slowly started coming up. He still was barely breathing, though. I really thought he would not survive.
I put Nutrical on his gums to hopefully give him some energy from the dextrose in it. He couldn't swallow because he was still unresponsive. The warming combined with the Nutrical brought his temperature up and he actually raised his little head. He seemed to be coming alive little by little.
I couldn't believe my eyes when he started to liven up. I don't think I've ever had one that was so dead come back to life like that. He was actually almost sitting up and he was looking when I spoke to him. What a miracle!
So, I figured he was responsive enough to try to feed him some baby food with some Nutrical in it to further boost his blood sugar. I had opened the baby food and was getting ready to add the Nurtical when he dived into the jar and started gobbling it down. A true miracle for sure. I think if I had been an hour later getting that call he would have surely died. I still can't believe he didn't die. When he gets bigger we will find him a perfect home. Although he has used up one of his nine lives we hope to make sure he gets full use out of the other eight.
